Yesterday I had an interesting conversation with my brother. As usual I was hyped talking about how generative AI like Gemini, ChatGTP or Meta AI are disrupting and going to drastically impact everything in the next couple of years.
He listened to me complete my monologue then with a concerned face he asked me:
If AI is going to impact that much, why do I have to continue my studies? Why do I have to put so much energy into getting my degree with the aim to build a career knowing that AI is going to take over my Job?
To be honest till now I’m looking for the right answer. But as a big bro you don’t let your brothers feel like you don’t have an answer to their questions. So humbly, I paused, took a deep breath and said:
Man, this is a tough one. If I've got it right, you’re asking, given that AI is going to disrupt every Job, which one offers a certain guarantee or won't be replaced by an AI - right? - Yes, he said.
Sales - I replied.
Sales? Why? He followed up
Sales because, beyond the job itself, it's the skills you acquire that make you indispensable on the job market. If you're good in sales - you're good in life.
He stared at me confused and added: I didn’t get it. Can you elaborate?
Of course! Here are 2 points:
A company exists because it has customers, and for the majority of companies, customers don't come on their own. You need someone to engage and close them. That someone is a Salesperson. So for 90% of companies, this person is a must have and cannot be replaced by an AI.
Second example, let's say later on you want to become an entrepreneur or set up your own business, based on my first example, to exist you'll need customers. Since you've learned how to sell, you'll have no trouble closing your first customers.
As your business grows, you'll need employees. What are you going to do? Start recruiting. To recruit the best talent, you'll need to close them by selling your company and why they should work for you.
Later, let's say you need to raise funds to develop new products, what will you do?
He continued: "I'll have to pitch my company to investors, and because I've been in sales, I'll know how to do it.
You got it!
If you're good in sales - you're good in life.
